Locksmiths have used a technique called “lock bumping” for many years to gain access to personal property such as homes or businesses when a key was not available. However, in recent news, there have been a lot of incidents in Chicago about lock bumping of homes and offices due to the availability of instructional videos and tools being sold over the internet. The basic technique involves making a bump key, and the manipulation of the locks’ cylinders – which allow access to thieves from the outside. To avoid this problem, you should invest in high-security locks. They’re pick-resistant, they offer bump proof technology, and the keys can’t be duplicated by anyone.
Affordable Options to Protect Your Home from Lock Bumping
Take your door locks to a licensed Chicago locksmith. If you don’t know of one, you can go to the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) to find one. They can install special pins that make it much more difficult, to bump a lock. Though this technique is viewed as the most affordable way to protect your home, it’s not the best way to guard against lock bumping. If you can not bring your locks to a locksmith’s shop, they can come to your home for an additional charge.[
Install Residential Bump Resistant Locks. There are two good choices on the market. Master Lock, Bump and Pick Resistant Locks and Kwikset Bump and Pick Resistant Locks. Both can be purchased at locksmith shops or at hardware stores.
Replace your locks with a light commercial grade lock. For example, Schlage locks. Though this lock will be a little more costly, they’re not as expensive as high-security locks. Schlage’s light commercial grade locks are heavy duty and pick and bump-resistant lock. They are a step up from what’s offered at home clubs and thus are only available at lock and security shops.
Install high-security bump and pick resistant locks. We recommend the Mul-t-lock brand for its strength, resistance to attack, and additional security features not available in other high-security locks. It’s a bit pricey but at least you’ll have peace of mind knowing your family is safe.
